Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Lisette Camilo announced the 50th installation of Wireless Pneumatic Thermostats, a sustainable technology that will save time, money and energy in older buildings. As part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s goal to transform New York City’s municipal buildings for a low-carbon future, as outlined in One City, Built to Last, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has identified, tested and vetted this new innovative wireless digital thermostat. Energy Manager Magazine – HSC Winnipeg expands its wireless pneumatic thermostat system

For both patient comfort and energy conservation, Cypress Envirosystems reports a total of 1625 wireless pneumatic thermostats (WPTs) have been installed at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, controlling 780,000 sf throughout 12 buildings, including:
the General, Children’s and Rehabilitation hospitals, maintenance building, and a multi-purpose office building.The WPT system continues to expand to other buildings from its initial installation in 2010, and is being integrated with the Honeywell EBI Energy Management System. “We’ve been using the [WPT] system for over six years. It gives us [direct digital control]-like visibility at the room level throughout our buildings with pneumatic control, and it increases our ability to ensure patients and staff are comfortable,” said Manny Bettencourt with HSC Maintenance Services.

Taking center-stage in the ambitious Midwest city is a smart building retrofit worthy of applause. Completed in 1990, 311 South Wacker Drive is an iconic post-modern 65-story skyscraper. At 961 feet tall, it is the seventh tallest building in Chicago and the 21st tallest in the US. Its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC), however, were less impressive until the building’s owners, Zeller Realty Group, found an innovative way to drag the outdated building into the smart world. MIDWEST ENERGY NEWS – In Chicago, hi-tech solution helps low-tech systems run more efficiently

When commercial real-estate firm Zeller Realty Group bought a postmodern staple of Chicago’s iconic skyline in 2014, it faced an energy-inefficiency quagmire. Like many buildings built prior to the late 1990s, 311 S. Wacker’s heating and air conditioning systems were controlled by pre-digital, mechanically operated pneumatic thermostats, which collected no data and could not be centrally controlled. The usual, pricey solution would be to rip out all the old analog HVAC infrastructure and replace it with direct, digital equipment. Instead, Zeller embarked on what it calls the “smartest energy efficiency retrofit in Chicago.” More >
